This intentional, semiannual practice for prospective members and current members alike will allow you to delve into your faith journey, meet others that are interested in learning more about our church, meet others that have been a part of this faith community for years, and hear about the values of Good Shepherd and how we live them out in our ministries. In the intervening years, she completed her Bachelor’s Degree in Mathematics and Spanish at Wake Forest University (Go Deacs!), earned her Master of Divinity at the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia, served her first call in a large congregation in Minnesota, and was the solo pastor at a small and feisty city church in Reading, PA. She also spent time in California, serving for a year as a hospital chaplain on mental health units and forming an intentional living community with her husband Brian and two other couples. While God’s call and her healthy sense of adventure have led her to surprising and varied ministry opportunities, the threads that connect them are a passion for radical inclusivity, creative prayer, social justice, and accompaniment through joy and sorrow. Pastor Marsha is a people-loving introvert. She enjoys good music, especially if it is live. She loves a long walk in the woods. She would rather sit around good food and drink talking about life, love, and God than almost anything else. She lives in Durham with her husband and three children: Drew, Caroline and Brigid. Pastor Marsha serves as lead pastor for outreach, faith formation, and congregational care and is primary liaison to our preschool. Baptized in the NC Synod at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Lincolnton at just 2 weeks old, Pastor Richard Goeres is glad to continue calling both the Lutheran Church and North Carolina home. His path to ordained ministry included degrees in Mathematics (Roanoke College) and Statistics (N.C. State) before graduating from Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary in 2014. Pastor Richard has served in large urban, small rural, and mid-sized suburban congregations, finding particular value in each.  Pastor Richard is hopeful about the church’s future and particularly energized by what the Lutheran expression of church has to offer the world these days. His wife, Lindsey, has roots in Raleigh and serves as a family physician. Their sons, Bennett and Rowan, bring tremendous light (and some longer nights!) into their life. Pastor Richard loves his work, but he also enjoys getting away for time with family, fishing, and cheering on all things University of South Carolina athletics. Pastor Richard serves as lead pastor for evangelism, stewardship, and finance and as head of staff. Vicar Daniel is a native of SC, grew up in Simpsonville (Greenville Area), and prior to coming to Good Shepherd, spent 8.5 years calling Charleston, SC, home. There, he served as the Director of Youth and Family Ministries for St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church in the heart of downtown Charleston. Having worked in a variety of ministry contexts (global mission, parish ministry, outdoor ministry, and a brief stint working as a recruiter for YAGM through the Churchwide office). Vicar Daniel’s excited to spend his internship at Good Shepherd, and looks forward to what the year will bring. Vicar Daniel graduated from Presbyterian College in 2013, majoring in Christian education and religion. From there, he joined the Young Adults in Global Mission (YAGM) program serving in Malaysia and Thailand for a year. After returning to the country, Daniel worked at outdoor ministry sites in Texas and Virginia before returning to South Carolina to serve at St. Matthew’s in Charleston. While serving at Charleston, Daniel discerned a call to rostered ministry and began seminary in the fall of 2019. This summer, Daniel graduated with a Master's of Divinity and a Master's of Christian Education. Vicar Daniel enjoys reading, getting outdoors, cooking, watching football (Go Bills!), and exploring new restaurants. John D. Jahr is Director of Music and Organist at Good Shepherd.  He is a native of Hitterdal MN, a rural community near Moorhead MN. It was at his home church,  Salem Lutheran, where he first played organ in worship at a young age. He studied music at Concordia College,  Moorhead, and has his Master of Sacred Music from Luther Seminary in St. Paul. He has served churches in Fargo ND, the Twin Cities, Dallas TX, and just completed 10 years at Vinje Lutheran Church in Willmar MN. John loves to lead singing. When he isn't at church, John spends time with his rescue dog, Rocky. He enjoys live theatre and music events, and all things Star Trek. John is thrilled to be on staff at Good Shepherd and enjoys making music together.   Andrew grew up in Virginia, studied at Roanoke College and spent his summers on staff at Camp Kirchenwald in Colebrook, PA from 2005-2008. For seven years, Andrew served as the youth ministry coordinator at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Vienna, VA during which he received his certificate in Youth Ministry through Lutheran Theological Seminary at Gettysburg. Andrew joined the staff at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in 2016 and works closely with ministry staff and volunteers, equipping and supporting them while exploring ways for all generations within the congregation to be church together. Andrew enjoys books, biking, thrift store shopping, genre films at the Alamo Drafthouse, and all things Nintendo. He and his wife live in Raleigh with their son and vermicomposting earthworms. Katy is a Raleigh native and a lifelong member of Good Shepherd. Before her time on staff, she served in many ministries, including Coffeehouse, Global Outreach to Mnene Parish in Zimbabwe, Music, and, most notably, Children and Youth. She loves running children’s programs such as Day Camp and Summerfest, participating in retreat weekends, and teaching Sunday School. Katy earned a North Carolina teaching license and degree in Psychology from Meredith College and began her career in Wake County schools in 2023. She had imagined she would be in public education for a while before working in ministry full-time, but it appears God had other plans. Katy officially joined the GSLC staff in 2025 and loves facilitating fellowship, Bible and theology study, and service opportunities for preschoolers through high schoolers and finding creative solutions for the inclusion of all people. At home, Katy enjoys reading fiction novels, Bible journaling, cooking comfort food recipes, creative writing, playing Stardew Valley, and jamming out to an eclectic mix of music (especially Taylor Swift). She also loves to call her nature walks “hiking” and spend time with her wonderful network of friends and family. Holly was born and raised in Lincolnton, NC, where she was an active member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church. After graduating from UNC-Chapel Hill, she met and later married her husband, Mike. Together, they joined GSLC in 2005 when their oldest child, Thomas was a little over a year old. In addition to their oldest, they also have a daughter, Liza, and a son, Samuel. Both Thomas and Liza are currently attending NC State and Samuel attends Millbrook High School. Holly has enjoyed working as both a teacher and an assistant at the preschool for the past 8 years before accepting the position of Preschool Director. When she is not watching Samuel play soccer or the older kids play tennis, she enjoys running, doing anything outdoors, and reading. Hailing from South Bend, Indiana (Go Irish!) Verna moved to Raleigh from Naperville, Illinois in 2000. She lived at the beach for several years, but then  moved back to Raleigh where it feels most like home. Verna is married to Ted, who works in specialized maintenance at Duke (Hospital). They have grown children living in nice places to visit, such as southern California, Denver, France, and the beautiful Virginia mountains.  Spending time with family is Verna's favorite activity. Exploring our city's amazing restaurants, festivals, concerts, sporting events, and lake boating are great forms of relaxation.  Eileen grew up in Northern Virginia, but ended up in the Boston area where she went to college and where she and her husband raised their two children. After one too many winters, they decided it was time to put away the snow blower and head south to Raleigh. Eileen has worked in a variety of administrative roles, including 10 years as the Administrative Assistant at a church in Massachusetts where she thoroughly enjoyed supporting a community of faith. She is thrilled to have the opportunity to work in a similar role at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. In her leisure time, Eileen enjoys road trips, sporting events, and puzzles. She is an extremely engaging and outgoing young lady who is energetic, enthusiastic, and open about her feelings. Within the first few minutes of a conversation, it is obvious how much it means to her to foster community with others.  Eliza was baptized at Good Shepherd’s font and does not remember a time when she was not active here. Over the years, she has built relationships with the very young, others her age, and the very old. And through the many ministries she’s been a part of, she has met people from different walks of life.  She “likes spending time at church and making connections,” Eliza says. She treasures her church family deeply and would like to help others - especially youth - experience how much church involvement can enrich their lives.  As a high school freshman, Eliza is very active in the Youth Group and can really energize her peers. She is proud that she helped organize a bake sale for Family Promise and made a recent high school trip to Carowinds become a reality. If asked for a favorite activity she says she, “loves helping with Summerfest.” Her favorite projects are the group ones because they allow interaction with others. Even her Confirmation Project – the Little Free Library that sits before the church – facilitates sharing and interacting through a book exchange.  When Eliza says, “I have basically done everything there is to do at Good Shepherd,” she isn’t lamenting a lack of programming; instead, she’s speaking to the freedom and agency young people are given to serve and lead however and wherever they’d like. Eliza genuinely believes that she makes a difference at Good Shepherd and also that it fulfills a need for her. According to her, “church involvement makes my life more enjoyable.” Thank you, Eliza, and all who invest in creating Christ-centered community at Good Shepherd.  Long before Cathie belonged to Good Shepherd, her ability to see and treat everyone as family was already in her DNA. With a background in special education, she ran a group home for adults with developmental disabilities while her husband attended Penn State for a degree in computer science. It was his career that eventually brought them to Raleigh in 1992.  While volunteering in her daughter’s school, Cathie befriended a Good Shepherd member who invited her to church. When she arrived, she found the people warm and welcoming. After only a few visits, she hurt her back and was so surprised when Pastor David Sloop remembered her and visited her at home. Similarly, when her husband suffered a devastating injury, congregation members brought over meals when they were needed the most. “This church shows its love,” she added warmly. Not long after joining, she was encouraged to participate in the Via de Cristo weekend retreat. At this event, each group table had been given a name. When Cathie saw that the table bore the name of her mother, who had recently passed away, she felt deeply touched. Good Shepherd was quickly becoming her “second family.” Cathie and Gary’s two daughters were welcomed into the Good Shepherd family in Confirmation. And later, to their delight, their two grandchildren were baptized here as well. In the years that have followed, Cathie has actively extended Good Shepherd’s familial embrace beyond all boundaries. Since 2007, she has championed the Mnene outreach ministry to orphans in Zimbabwe, and it remains close to her heart. “That’s my baby,” she said emotionally, “We have truly changed people’s lives.” She is so proud of the many young people who have thrived and succeeded in life, thanks to Good Shepherd’s caring, sustained support for Mnene.  Also meaningful to Cathie is the time she spends with the Whittecar SME class, which takes her back to her roots in working with folks with special needs, and her love for ushering, which connects her with the people and families in the pews. It warms Cathie’s heart that people of all ages, backgrounds, and perspectives are intentionally welcomed into our church family. Though she may not admit it, she is now a massive contributor to this culture, always willing to show the church’s love through a good hug and sweet smile. Earlier this month, we celebrated the completion of the Mnene ministry at Good Shepherd. Thank you, Cathie, Mnene leaders, and Good Shepherd, for walking with our kindred in Mnene these last 23 years. What a gift! In 2017, when Whitney and her husband, Anthony, states away from their respective homes, found themselves on the cusp of starting a family of their own here in the Triangle – she knew two things: 1. She was blessed beyond measure to have a foundation of faith to launch from, and 2. She was determined that her children would have the same.  Growing up in Delaware, Whitney explains that her Lutheran faith and church involvement were “an integral part of childhood.” Experiences throughout her lifetime forged relationships that, to this day, and despite distance, remain “like family.” So finding a church special enough to live up to this for her own children was no small feat.   From their home in Durham to Raleigh, she and her husband scouted out numerous Lutheran churches. There was one place they just kept coming back to for its consistent message that children were not only welcome but also a necessary and joyful fabric in the church’s celebration of Christ. Whitney and Anthony agreed, they had found the finishing touch for their young family’s future, Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. Whitney smiles as she describes all the special moments through the years since they made that choice: baptisms of her two sons, the joy of their first Christmas Eve service, her becoming the Nursery Coordinator, to name only a few. She adds that Good Shepherd’s impact has “extended well beyond just involvement with the children”, noting she is deeply grateful for the diverse, cross-generational community that has become such a blessing in her life.  Just the other day, when picking up her oldest son from his first Good Shepherd Summerfest, she asked him what he thought, how it stacked up to the numerous other camps he had attended that year. When he declared it “the BEST!” of them all, Whitney said she beamed, knowing that because of Good Shepherd, her wish had come true.  Choices appear to be a significant factor in Andrew Nunalee’s life. It seems he has already had to make so many of them, especially considering that he has only just begun his high school career.   When he speaks of the choices he has made and his many accomplishments, he sounds more like a college student than a ninth grader. The question is not “What does Andrew do?” It is, “What does he not do?” When describing his many school activities, Andrew mentions baseball, cross country, golf, and playing trombone in the band. He speaks of the choices he believes he will have to make to prioritize cross-country and golf. He knows at such a young age that it is hard to do everything and do it well. Andrew has been a member at Good Shepherd since birth. That choice was made for him, and he feels it was a good one.  His church activities are as numerous as his school activities. He is fully capable of running the entire AV system at Good Shepherd, including the YouTube streaming. Something that he says is, “Good for the church and lots of fun.” Andrew has a deep affection for Camp Agape and thinks he has been there at least 10 times for various camps and events, including Confirmation Camp. He combined his love of golf and Camp Agape for his recent Confirmation project. He hosted a golf event at a local driving range to raise awareness for Camp Agape’s golf tournament fundraiser. Andrew is especially proud of his work with Summerfest and with good reason. He spends the whole week with the kids, getting their microphone levels just right and ensuring the production comes together. With so many participants, it is quite an accomplishment!   Most recently, Andrew has joined the church’s internship team, offering a youth perspective to our guidance for and support of Vicar Daniel.  According to Andrew, his involvement at Good Shepherd is “a mixture of knowing I’m helping the Church and doing the things I enjoy.” Andrew Nunalee is an effective person.  It will follow him all of his life. He will constantly be challenged to make choices because he cannot possibly do everything he wants to do. Good Shepherd is very blessed that this impressive, effective, young man has made the choice to do God’s work with his hands here. Growing up in Middletown, New York, Jennifer Doty did not have a constant church home. She heard conflicting beliefs and practices in different churches, creating confusion.  Jennifer and her family joined a Lutheran church in 2000, and the perplexing array of beliefs seemed to fall into a comforting place as she raised her children in the Lutheran faith. Her church community became a very important part of her life. But tragedy struck, and life became very difficult when her husband passed away in 2018. As a single working mother of four, she felt the burden of responsibility to get everyone through this life trauma together. “God definitely helped me through it,” she said. A friend in Raleigh encouraged her to come visit, and Jennifer liked what she saw of the area. “I *really* liked the idea of no more shoveling snow!” she chuckled. In 2019, after a few more visits, Jennifer made the courageous decision to move her family to Raleigh and make a fresh start for all of them. “Two things were at the top of my list of immediate needs,” she remembers, “a church and Scouts.”  Jennifer feels that God was instrumental in leading her to Good Shepherd when she learned that both requirements were met here. She also points out that, on her last Sunday at her New York church, the pastor preached at length on the subject of the good shepherd. “It was meant to be,” smiled Jennifer. Jennifer felt at home here right away, saying that Good Shepherd was just traditional enough, warm and welcoming. And there was a Scouting program for her sons and daughter. But, she was troubled when her two youngest were strongly resisting children’s activities. They felt uncomfortable in their new church environment until something happened to change that. Long before becoming our Children and Youth Coordinator, Katy Peachey spontaneously took Jennifer’s two young children under her wing, helping to assimilate them happily with their new Good Shepherd peers. “I will be forever grateful to her,” said Jennifer, “and I was thrilled to hear of her new position.” This young family presently takes part in all of the youth programs with joy and excitement. In addition, Jennifer will be leading an adult SME class this Fall using the weekly Gospel lesson in the lectionary for discussion. Jennifer still remembers her New York church family with love, but she is happy that she and her children have found another one here at Good Shepherd. She continues to work very hard, as a physical therapy assistant and as a mom raising four children, but she is at peace knowing that they are all receiving the faith foundation that will guide them through life. When she joins the staff as Children and Youth Ministries Coordinator on August 11, Katy Peachey will be given a literal key to Good Shepherd. However, since right around the age of 12, Katy has steadily been given the proverbial keys, allowing her to lead in increasingly age-appropriate ways and foster ownership of the church as well as her faith.   Katy has been a part of Good Shepherd since birth and was baptized in the gymnasium while the sanctuary underwent renovation.  As a child, she remembers seasons she’d have to be dragged to church and others when she'd do the dragging. “One Sunday morning in first grade, my mom figured we’d like to stay home,” Katy recalls. “I ended up being the one who was like, ‘Mom, we’re going to church.’”     With a desire at such a young age to be among God’s faithful people, it’s not surprising that at Confirmation Camp, the summer before 7th grade, Katy remembers a quiet moment she spent contemplating the baptismal promises and wondering whether they were something worth holding on to. It was then that she proclaimed to herself, “I want to be here,” and that she was “all in.” Katy began writing the Pastor Skits for Summerfest shortly after her time at camp. At 15, she was invited to serve in worship as an Assisting Minister and to join the Mnene ministry on a visit to Zimbabwe. And at 17, after years of leading in the Children’s Ministry, children in the program identified her as a Christian mentor and safe adult.  “I felt part of this thing,” Katy beamed. “Me being at Good Shepherd mattered.”   It’s hard to believe that extroverted Katy ever felt like an “unknown.” But thanks to trusted relationships with children and adults who invested in her, she’s continuing to make Good Shepherd a place where all God’s children are known, loved, and part of this thing we call Church.    Even if you do not know Gordy by name, you know his smile. As a member of the Welcome Team, he is one of the first faces you see on a Sunday morning, and the warmth of his invitation is impossible to ignore.  As someone who makes his living connecting people and developing businesses, Gordy was a natural for this role. So, it’s no surprise that it was Good Shepherd’s message of unconditional, cross-generational inclusion that initially brought him and his family to GSLC. However, it was the spaces in between that led to something even deeper. Gordy grew up with a strong Lutheran foundation, and when he and his wife Alice brought their growing family through GSLC’s doors in 2014, he was looking for a church that would foster a message of God’s unconditional love for not only his family but also for others. “I believe we are here to love and support everybody,” Gordy says, “no matter what.”   From the accommodations for and inclusion of children, to the familiar sound of the beautiful organ pipes, to the sermons, Good Shepherd matched this message to a “T.” In the years that followed, life happened, and Good Shepherd provided a space for God’s presence in some of the toughest times when he needed it most.  It was during one especially challenging period a few years ago, Gordy started coming to church, in the middle of the day, to sit alone and pray. It was in those silent midday moments, Gordy was overcome with the feeling of an “unconditional acceptance”.  It was as if the church was a conduit, highlighting his deeply held faith that, even when things seem bleak*,* he is never alone; God is there. This powerful experience has stayed with him, with particular relevance to today’s climate. To Gordy, being a member of a congregation is about being present for each other through both the joyful and challenging times, differences, and all. When meeting Isaac for the first time, one might think—typical 8th grader. He’s into Lego, Star Wars, and Minecraft. He enjoys drawing and is particularly fond of a black-and-white lighthouse he drew back in 4th grade. He is interested in engineering but unsure how it will factor into his future. After all, he is young and has his whole life ahead of him. While probing deeper into his life at Good Shepherd, a thoughtful and faithful young man emerges. Isaac and his family joined Good Shepherd in 2018. Although COVID shutdowns inevitably made it a little hard to get involved, he is now engaged in the youth ministry and will be confirmed in a few short weeks. Though a part of ministries across the church, Isaac found his niche serving Coffeehouse, Good Shepherd’s monthly ministry alongside adults with developmental disabilities. He readily admits that it all began when “my mom dragged me there.” He was quickly put to work washing dishes in the kitchen, taking to it immediately. Nowadays, you can find him behind the scenes at every Coffeehouse, alongside his mom and stepdad, willingly cleaning up after each event. At Coffeehouse, Isaac found “a simple way to help people and make a big impact.” This Coffeehouse Hero is a man of few words; however, his contributions impact the participants' lives more than he can imagine.  Thank you to all who support Coffeehouse by serving the ministry and giving to Good Shepherd’s general fund… and every parent who has ever dragged a child to volunteer together. Merry, as the spelling of her name implies, brings joy to the people around her, and it is evidenced by her devotion to serving others.   Merry grew up in Wisconsin, where she and her family attended a Congregational church, known today as the United Church of Christ.  Denny Oestreich was her high school sweetheart and became her husband 59 years ago.  Merry worked as a hospital nurse, raised two boys, is grandmother to three and great grandmother of three.   After moving here from Ohio for Denny’s work in 1984, the couple made finding a church home a priority. A small church was desired, and Good Shepherd’s fledgling church meeting in a school gymnasium seemed to be just what they were looking for.  “We wanted to be fed spiritually and be a part of a faith community,” Merry shared. “You get to know people when you set up and put away chairs together every Sunday,” she chuckled. To this day, she continues to feel included in the community and fed through the worship service.  Especially meaningful for her is the Confession and Forgiveness each week. “I get so much from the sermons,” Merry adds. “They always seem personal and relatable.”   Merry’s commitment to serving others is revealed in her involvement with the church. Over decades of singing in the choir, tidying up the sanctuary with the Pew Crew, and taking care of the plants and flowers at the church entrance, she admits, “I have found my true home in community outreach.” She finds joy in serving with Family Promise transitional housing, sharing meals with Helping Hands, and providing transportation to doctor appointments - wherever she can be of service.  Shrugging her shoulders, she says, “I just really love doing this kind of work.”   Good Shepherd has been a part of Merry’s life and faith journey for 40 years. It was the first church home that she and Denny shared, and over time became their focus, the center of their social circles, and a provider of opportunities to serve. Her sweet small voice belies it, but the joy she shares is a very big part of that. Though hard to believe for those who know her, when Lilith began attending Good Shepherd in the fifth grade, she didn’t necessarily want to be there.  “I was a people pleaser,” Lilith recalls, “but at that time, I had just started at my fourth elementary school, my second in North Carolina after moving from Texas… I lacked confidence.”   As sixth grade neared, Lilith made the choice to attend Middle School Ministry, Good Shepherd’s Confirmation program. Though her first year was entirely online due to COVID, she still put herself out there and began building relationships with her leaders and fellow students. Over time, Lilith began to, as she puts it, “make a faith of her own.” Following her 8th Grade Confirmation, Lilith began looking for autonomy. “Through mentoring, traveling to \[the ELCA Youth Gathering in\] New Orleans with the youth group, and serving in the children’s ministry,” she shared, “this community has fostered my independence.”  Lilith can point to a moment during freshman year that really boosted her confidence. One morning, while serving in Worship & Wonder, the children’s Sunday school, she remembers a child who was particularly upset. She took it upon herself to sit with this child and was able to help calm them down. “Noticing the impact I made on him made an impact on me.” Now a sophomore, Lilith loves being part of the Good Shepherd community. Not only does Good Shepherd help foster her independence and boost her confidence, but it has also helped her explore her relationship with God. Since returning from the 2024 ELCA Youth Gathering, Lilith has been reading the Bible with the YouVersion app and listening to God. “God has been a guide and caretaker… it’s helpful to pray.” “In the beginning, church was a thing I went to. Now, church is a thing I carry with me.” Ohioan Joan Cogan spent her career mentoring students as a high school guidance counselor. In 1995, one of her students’ lives was tragically cut short in an accident involving an unmarked railroad crossing.  “Ryan \[Moore\] was an incredible student,” Joan reflected, “with a passion for life and a bright future ahead of him.” Losing Ryan sparked something inside Joan and, for the last thirty years, has inspired her to share Ryan’s story in tremendously generous ways. This life’s mission is how she ended up at Good Shepherd last March with a check in-hand for $10,000.    “You were the closest Lutheran church to the airport,” stated Joan, explaining her rationale for choosing Good Shepherd as the recipient for her enormous gift. In her retirement, and more so since the passing of her late husband, Joan has traveled to churches across the country, making donations in Ryan’s name to children and youth programs.  Were Good Shepherd to accept her gift, Joan’s only stipulations were that it’d be used on something “kids can enjoy” in the immediate future and that we’d pass along the story of Ryan with an awareness to the dangers of unmarked railroad crossings. With profound gratitude and respect for her life-giving work, Joan’s donation was graciously received. In the months proceeding, staff accessed the needs of our growing ministries and envisioned how the gift could be put to use. Perhaps you’ve noticed a few of the things purchased which include 22 new wooden “Worship and Wonder” storytelling sets for our preschool and early elementary Sunday school, storage for the new storytelling sets, a podium to help the check-in/out process for “Worship and Wonder,” four Lovesac bean bag chairs for Middle School Ministry, and a new smart TV and rug for the Erin Chaffee Youth Room. Since their purchase, each item has been regularly utilized and indeed, enjoyed. Per Joan’s request, we want to make sure everyone remembers to pay attention while driving and engages in conversations concerning railroad crossing safety with the teenage drivers in their lives. Through her experiences, she has witnessed the beginning and the end of life. And faith has been her companion, “a consoling peace, and an anchor.” Born in Kansas, Carol pursued a career as a nurse. After she witnessed the birth of a baby for the first time in nursing school, Carol says that her belief in a higher power was confirmed and strengthened.  Fittingly, Carol finished her working career providing palliative care to the elderly. “Working with end-of-life patients gave me great perspective regarding the cycle of life,” she said. That experience was helpful as she and Lynis, her husband of 62 years, planned their retirement together. Carol and Lynis had met at college on a blind date and their marriage has been blessed with two children, eight grandchildren, and five great grandchildren. With thanksgiving for their shared health at retirement, they began researching and visiting communities offering progressive care in the Greenville, N.C. area, where they had lived for many years.   Out of love, however, their son and daughter suggested that they look at similar communities in the Raleigh area, about halfway between their two homes. Carol and Lynis did just that, and now live happily at Springmoor Retirement Community.  This major move came with many difficult adjustments including leaving their friends, their church, and their home garden that they grew and tended to for many years. Though they attended a Methodist church in Greenville, Carol, who was raised Lutheran, did find solace in the fact that a Lutheran church was now right across the street from their new home!   “But location really did not play a part in our joining Good Shepherd,” Carol adds, “we studied the website and really liked what we saw.” The types of activities, the community involvement, and the organizations the church supported were positives for them.  But the most important message was the inclusive statement making it clear that all people are welcomed and our differences are valued.  When they visited, they encountered “friendly people, opportunities for involvement, and two pastors who beautifully complement each other, and are both wonderful leaders.” It has been two years since the Dohms first joined Good Shepherd and it’s safe to say that they’ve really dug in. In addition to regularly attending the Wednesday morning “Midweek Study” and enjoying the programs that the Vicars have offered - Carol keeps the prayer beads that she made with Vicar Robin right on her nightstand - they have also found a new way to exercise their green thumbs despite now living in an apartment. With Lynis, Carol has taken ownership of the care and keeping of Good Shepherd’s Memorial Garden, the final resting spot for many congregants. Together, they work to help ensure that Good Shepherd’s memorial garden is a visual reminder of our journeys of life and faith, colorful and beautiful. Thank you, Carol, Lynis, and all who give of their time and treasure to the benefit of Good Shepherd’s facility and grounds.   If you have been anywhere near the kitchen at Good Shepherd, you know Mary.  If food is being served, she is in the middle of it all. “Food is my love language.  Entertaining people is my love language,” she says. “I’m not the Mary who sits at Jesus’ feet…I’m the Martha who is worrying about getting him fed!”  Mary refers to herself as a “Miracle Baby”.  It was considered a miracle at the time that both she and her mother survived her birth.  And, it is also somewhat of a miracle that she and husband Chris made their way to Raleigh and Good Shepherd. Mary grew up in the small town of Brighton, Iowa – the youngest of eight and the only girl.  Pursuing her interest in fashion design and merchandising, she made her way to Arlington, Texas and met Chris there.  After their wedding, they lived in San Antonio and Fort Worth.  Chris famously told her he would never leave the state of Texas, but a business opportunity presented itself and they eventually found their way to Raleigh. Mary and Chris visited several churches in Raleigh, looking for a faith community with energy, fellowship opportunities, and meaningful messaging.  Mary also needed to express her love of music.  They believed Good Shepherd would fill these needs.   According to Mary, the friendliness of the people at Good Shepherd made their decision an easy one.  And, as she put it, “Someone remembered us.  And that was a decision maker.”   Since joining Good Shepherd, Mary has been involved in many ministries – including the Sanctuary Choir, Celebration Ringers, and Dinner for Seven.  But, her presence as the “Kitchen Guru” is the most visible.   She began as a kitchen helper and it eventually morphed into the Hospitality Team lead.  Mary has completely rearranged and organized Good Shepherd’s kitchen and is always present for Coffeehouse, Memory Café, Lenten Soup Suppers, and all the other gatherings that include snacks or meals.   “Cooking for people gives me a sense of purpose and pleasure and joy.  I don’t do it for a thank you,” Mary says. Good Shepherd is blessed that this “Miracle Baby” found her way to our congregation, and we do thank her for her contribution to both our worship and our stomachs! Laura Prill came to Raleigh in 1988 to find a career. But it was her search for a church that led to a calling. She will tell you that the alive, intimate, and inviting atmosphere of a fledgling Good Shepherd immediately “just felt right.” Over the years, from Bible Study, to Youth Group, to Prayer Team, and Music Ministry, Laura found herself immersed in a community that forged not only a deeper connection to her faith but also in her relationship with God. However, it wasn’t until she went on her first Via de Cristo retreat that her eyes were opened to the profound love God had for her all along. Laura explained that while in conversation with the different communities within GSLC, the topic of Via de Cristo (Spanish for “The Way of Christ”), the three-day Lutheran retreat, seemed to keep coming up. The persistence felt purposeful and, after she experienced her first weekend, she understood why. Laura credits immersion within this “Grace-filled” event, with its fellowship, joyful worship, and opportunity to delve into Christian truths, as to when her “relationship with God really started.” Furthermore, it “opened her eyes that God had found her before she even realized it” all those years ago.  With retirement on her side, Laura’s involvement in the Good Shepherd community continues to thrive, including as a Church Officer. She remains active on the board of directors for Via de Cristo, and maintains that Good Shepherd’s weekly Sunday morning education program keeps her actively present in her faith. Laura’s journey of lifelong formation started with a Bible study and continues to have a beautiful ripple effect throughout her life. “There hasn’t been any activity I have been involved in,” Laura beams as she continues, “that I haven’t walked away with a new friend.”  Music has always been a part of Rich Houze’s life. He earned a Music Production and Engineering Bachelor's Degree from Berklee College of Music in Boston. When he returned to his home state of Indiana to pursue a master’s degree at Purdue, he worked part time at the Baldwin warehouse where he learned to tune pianos. But before he was even born, his mother, an opera singer, performed at the Houston Grand Opera as a nun, seven months pregnant with him. So it is all the more surprising that when Rich began worshiping at Good Shepherd in 2000, he hadn’t played music for over five years. “I left music,” Rich shared, “because I didn’t think I could build a career on it.” With a job in industrial engineering and a young family, music was on the backburner. That was, until he met Ann Buff who, at the time, directed the 1st-5th grade choir.  “Shortly after we started going to Good Shepherd,” Rich mused, “my family went to a church picnic at Blue Jay Point. Someone must have told Ann that I played piano, because next thing I knew, she was asking me if I’d accompany Shepherd’s Choir.” Looking for a way to plug in, he accepted the invitation and accompanied Ann for seven years before being promoted to director in 2008.  Along with directing Shepherd’s Choir for a total of sixteen years, Rich regularly tunes Good Shepherd’s pianos, plays trumpet at Easter, and entertains the Coffeehouse crowd with his band. Additionally, he can often be found in the back of the sanctuary running the soundboard, facilitating the livestream, or training individuals on either of those responsibilities – making sure that folks onsite and online can enjoy vibrant worship experiences as much as he does. “I’m thankful to be involved in such an engaged community,” Rich reflected. And we, too, are thankful for Rich, his rediscovery of music, and for the many years he’s shared the joy of music across generations at Good Shepherd. When David and Karen Cope moved to the Triangle, they enjoyed the vibrant life of retirees. Now living closer to family and getting to know their new church – Good Shepherd – they found a place to belong. In those days, going out was a big part of the way they enjoyed themselves, whether it was dinner and a movie or seeing a show at DPAC. And they explored ways to dive into life at church as well, getting to know the folks near them in the pew and getting involved with Sunday Morning Education. Through the years, Karen began to develop health issues, and dementia was a part of her diagnosis. As the dementia progressed and David found himself increasingly in the role of caretaker, a friend in the pew, Ginny, made a suggestion: She encouraged them to check out Good Shepherd’s ministry, Memory Café. Ginny thought it might be a way for David and Karen to enjoy the feel of one of their nice nights out, in a safe, friendly, and supportive environment. Skeptical at first, David and Karen decided to try it, and David was thrilled when Karen absolutely loved the event. They attended each café, enjoying the camaraderie, the food, and the entertainment. “When she didn’t want to do much else,” David said, “she always looked forward to Memory Café.” Even in her final months, when conversation was difficult, Karen enjoyed sitting around the table, smiling at the conversation of others. And being a hearty eater, she loved the delicious food prepared by the kitchen crew. Karen passed away in 2019.  Then, COVID temporarily closed Memory Cafe.  When this ministry opened again, David wanted to give back to Memory Café, in honor of his beloved spouse. As a thank you for all that Memory Café meant to her, he now plays piano during the dinner portion of the program each time they gather. The music connects in a special way to folks with dementia, and it connects David to that special time with Karen in her final years. This year, David and Karen would have celebrated 50 years of marriage. We remember her with fondness and give thanks for the ways we can be the real presence of Christ’s love for one another at every age and stage of life. Thank you, David, for sharing your love of Karen with our Memory Café folks in this meaningful way! The first thing you notice about 10 ½-year-old Will is his infectious smile. The second is his genuine joy at being a part of the Good Shepherd community. A fellowship he was eager to find 2 years ago when he and his family’s quest for a place to connect their love of God through service began. Before joining Good Shepherd, Will described “feeling separate from what was happening at church.” While he enjoyed attending Sunday School and services, he wanted to experience more connection. Shortly after finding Good Shepherd, Will wasted no time joining his Grandmother for his first Coffee House. “I felt a little lost at first,” he admitted and quickly added, “but everyone was so friendly that I could ask anyone for help. I just got into it. I blended in!” This warmth and inclusion was all it took to ignite Will’s engagement in even more activities.  From the Memory Café to being a leader for his younger parishioners, he beams as he explains how he invites friends to join him and continues to learn about God through his participation and service. Will is thankful that these experiences have made him “a better communicator” with God.  Listening to Will enthusiastically advocate for participation, service, and inclusion as a way to grow closer to God, it is difficult to imagine a time when he was anything but connected. From his smile to his spirit, Will is a testament to “Inspiring Service” for all ages.  Ask Page about her involvement with Good Shepherd and it is readily apparent that for her, to worship God means to serve others. It was during the pandemic, in her search to find the right outlet for this, that Page discovered a match in Good Shepherd, and so much more. Despite being active members in their former congregation, Page felt something was missing for both her and her family. The parish “had stopped growing, learning,” she explained.  A lack of connection with the new pastor and the start of COVID finally prompted her to explore other churches on YouTube. It was a sermon by Pastor Marsha that hit a chord and led Page and her family to walk through Good Shepherd’s doors in 2021 and dive into volunteering at the Coffee House. From there, Page describes, with a vibrant energy usually reserved for theme parks, her ongoing involvement with Coffee House, Memory Café, and Summerfest, emphasizing the genuine kindness of those she is grateful to serve beside.  And while it is evident Page and her family have found the dynamic, cross-generational community they were looking for, there’s another element that keeps coming up. “The sermons reinvigorate my faith,” shares Page, “they bring me a sense of closeness in my relationship with God.” Often, one will hit home so hard that she and her family will share a smile and whisper a collective “mic drop!” at its conclusion. For Page, Good Shepherd’s numerous opportunities allowed her to engage herself and her family with God through inspiring service to others. And the sermons, well, they’re the magic that got her here in the first place and continue to form her faith along the way. Coming out of the pandemic, much of Ashley’s life was brand new. She found herself in a new home with a new baby and now seated in the pew of a new-to-her church. Life was deeply good, but it was also disorienting and demanding. With 2 little ones at home, the children’s ministry at Good Shepherd was a big draw for her family. As Eric and Ashley got their kids settled in Worship and Wonder at 10:00 am on Sunday mornings, they found themselves with an hour to spare. Hoping to meet some folks and enjoy grown-up conversation, they tried the Sunday Morning Education class, “Sacred Journeys,” coffee in hand. With teacher Chris Watson taking the lead, the Sacred Journeys class was living its mission to “think critically, feel deeply, and wrestle earnestly” as they explored faith together. In class on Sundays, Ashley was excited by the fresh voices and new insights she discovered, and she was energized by conversation with her new Sacred Journeys community. “Good Shepherd has helped me and my whole family find the connection we’ve been longing for and re-center faith formation and spiritual discipline in our lives,” Ashley said, “I sponge up so much foundational information and introspective insight from Chris Watson’s Sacred Journeys class, which quickly became a favorite part of my week.” Inspired by Sacred Journeys, Ashley created a reading nook at home—a quiet place to reflect, journal, and pray. Thanks to Chris’s book recommendations, she draws inspiration, comfort, and energy from a vibrant collection of books by insightful and faithful authors. Amid parenting and working full-time, she now takes time for herself. Through this time, she receives nourishment and care from the God who loves her life’s disorienting and demanding changes. We’re so glad Ashley, Eric, Olivia, and Isaac are growing roots at Good Shepherd, where lifelong formation is valued and lived-out in Christ-centered, life-changing community! “We were not a churchgoing family,” said Joanna about growing up in Greenwood, Indiana. When she wasn’t busy breaking Indiana high school swim records, she would occasionally attend church with friends, mostly megachurches or Mass with neighbors, never Lutheran. Needless to say, becoming the wife of a Lutheran pastor and Army Chaplain Candidate was not on her radar screen! Once Aaron entered her life, their shared focus began to take shape.  Because of events in Aaron’s life, he began to consider entering seminary with the eventual goal of becoming an Army Chaplain. “He gave me plenty of outs”, Joanna said. He told me, “If this isn’t what you want, it’s OK. He wanted me to have a choice.” They made the choice together and he entered seminary. When it came time for Aaron to enter the vicar program as part of his seminary education, Joanna was also completing a master’s degree in counseling. They were both nervous about the city and congregation where they would be placed. Lovingly, Aaron requested sites where Joanna could also facilitate her licensing. “Some of the focus was on me,” she shared. “I think he wanted me to flourish in the program, too.”   They were both excited – and nervous – in April of last year when all of the vicar candidates were called into the seminary sanctuary to receive their assignments. As soon as they were assigned to Good Shepherd Lutheran in Raleigh, they began preparing their move. Into her time in Raleigh and at Good Shepherd, Joanna was delighted to find that rather than having to meet expectations of the church, she was allowed to choose her involvement. She sings in the Sanctuary Choir, has volunteered in the nursery and at Camp Agape, and even tag-teams with Vicar Aaron in his effort to develop the young adult ministry.  “Good Shepherd is providing for my needs, as well as Aaron’s,” she feels. She believes these last stages of his education are meant to solidify their ministry journey together. And, according to Joanna, Good Shepherd has been an ideal environment for both of them.  Your generosity and sustained giving to Good Shepherd make it possible for us to offer the vicar experience to seminarian families like the Spanglers. From the age of 17, organist and former music director Karen Brown joined churches where her musical and leadership gifts were needed, whether Lutheran, Presbyterian or Episcopal. That was, until she was called to Raleigh in 2015 to fulfill a different kind of role, “Grandma.”  Karen and her husband Jim quickly identified Good Shepherd as their new faith family due to it’s proximity to their home as well it’s approachable pastors and commitment to the liturgical year. “*There was an immediate friendliness to Good Shepherd,”* Karen remembers. “*And a certain freedom to participation - we’re not instructed on how we must think.”*  With this freedom, Karen dove right into where she’d always been most comfortable, “*giving and giving back to God*” through music. Starting with the sanctuary choir, Karen eventually joined the bell choir, began playing her harp for special events, and even filled in on the organ and piano when the need arose. Her musicality creates, and continues to create, vibrant worship experiences at Good Shepherd. If you know Karen, then you know that music isn’t the only way Karen brings vibrancy to the sanctuary. Karen’s warmth comes through in her smile, which she’s eager to share whether it’s catching up with a young adult friend after worship, mentoring an 8th grader, or eagerly supporting one of our resident Girl Scouts through generous cookie-purchasing. Karen believes that “*personal feeling*” is important to a faith community. We explore life in God’s love through Scripture, message, prayer, and praise. You can follow along in the worship bulletin and in the hymnal. Bibles are in every pew. "Come-as-you are" also means that you can dress however you are most comfortable. We welcome all here.  Liturgical.  We celebrate Holy Communion, a taste of God’s grace, at every service. We use liturgies from Evangelical Lutheran Worship, as well as from other resources. The services are firmly rooted in the traditions handed down through generations, yet are casual and personal. Services are based on a pattern of Gathering, Word, Meal, and Sending. Modern and Inspiring.  Music borrows from the best of traditional Lutheran hymnody, contemporary Christian, world music, Taizé meditations, spirituals, and folk traditions is a meaningful element of Good Shepherd's worship services. Musical leadership includes choir, piano, organ, guitars, bass, drums, and soloists. At Good Shepherd, as Jesus did, we welcome all of God’s children as integral members of the body of Christ. As members of our faith community, children serve in worship and participate as part of the congregation. You can feel comfortable that your children will be welcome in worship. We’d like to bring to your attention some spaces and activities designed for children to experience and participate in worship according to their needs. Good Shepherd is located on the southeast corner of Creedmoor and Sawmill Roads in North Raleigh. Entrances to the parking lot are located on both Creedmoor and Sawmill Roads. Once you get here, enter the church through the large front doors at the center of the building. Grab a cup of coffee before or after worship. An usher will give you a bulletin at the Sanctuary door and can answer any questions you may have. Grab a seat, get comfortable and prepare your heart for worship. When baptizing children, parents are called to speak on their behalf. They are called to make a commitment to their child and promise that they will raise them up in faith and in prayer throughout their life. There will also be some people there who promise to help you do that. Baptismal sponsors, often called godparents, are chosen by parents to be in special relationship with children as they grow in their Christian identity. Then the gathered congregation that day will promise to support all parents and families in the same way. And all the while we remember and celebrate what God is doing in and through our lives. It’s a powerful moment!  This is all done as a community – baptism is not done in a vacuum. Because of the promises that are made that day, it works well for families to be active participants in the life of a faith community, a congregation, a church home. Our community responds to its promises by becoming an active participant in the life of the family. We do this by supporting Sunday School classes for children, creating learning opportunities for adults, and continuing together in worship, service, prayer, and support in good times and in bad. If you have not yet had a family member baptized at Good Shepherd, engage in a Baptismal Seminar with one of the pastors and Andrew Buck, the Director of Cross-Generational Ministry. Seminars typically last about an hour and are a great opportunity to learn about, or renew your understanding of, Lutheran beliefs around baptism. We'll also share with you the many ways Good Shepherd commits to walking alongside families as they live out the promises made at baptism.  If you aren’t a member of a church community yet, it is customary for families to become engaged in the life of a congregation as members before bringing young ones forward for baptism. Through elementary school, Good Shepherd partners with parents as we prepare our children for the rite of Confirmation, confidently and consistently “placing scripture in their hands.” All Sunday School classes meet from 10:00 to 10:45 throughout the traditional school year, September through May. Worship & Wonder is our Sunday School for 3 year-olds through 2nd graders. [Worship & Wonder](https://worshipwonder.org/) combines engaging storytelling with the rhythms of Lutheran-Christian worship. As children listen to and watch a new Bible story unfold each week, they are drawn in and encouraged to respond in their own unique way. We hope every student leaves Worship & Wonder with a deeper knowledge and understanding of Bible stories from both the Old and New Testament.  Prior to entering the 3rd grade, students are gifted their own Study Bible at the 2nd *Grade Blessing of Bibles* event. In Sunday School, 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students use this Bible, along with elements of play and drama, to dig deeper into the stories each week.    From 10:00 - 10:45 am during the program year, the nursery is available in room E-5 for children ages 0-2 so that their grown-ups can participate or serve in their own faith formation opportunity.   During the school year, Crosswalk Kids (children kindergarten-5th grade) will have opportunities to participate in fun, faith-forming activities. Activities include "almost" sleepovers, family service projects and BYG (Building Youth Groups) weekend retreats at Camp Agape. In addition to activities specifically for children, we recognize that much of a child's faith formation happens through the family. Through events like our annual Advent Festival and activity kits we send home for the season of lent, we equip families to practice faith in the home. At Good Shepherd, even the littlest ones can join a choir and begin making music together. At Day Camp, we focus on helping children grow in faith, form new friendships and have fun. The key to Day Camp is the camp staff and the music, arts and crafts, games, nature time and Bible study that they bring to our children – in addition to their great love and contagious enthusiasm for sharing the faith. *Summerfest* is a week-long musical theater camp takes familiar Bible stories, sets them to music and brings them into modern day times. With roles for children from rising kindergarten through 5th grade, it culminates with entertaining performances during Sunday morning worship. Sunday morning, from September to May, 6th-8th grade students gather in the gym for Middle School Ministry, a full hour of fun and faith formation. A typical hour includes games, large group teaching, and time in small groups (4-7 students of the same grade and both a high school-age and adult co-leader). Friends and guests are always welcome. Good Shepherd has hosted multiple Girl Scout Troops over the years. Currently, there are three troops who meet at Good Shepherd: Cadettes (middle school), Seniors and Ambassadors (high school). Children younger than 6th grade are welcome to participate with their grown-up; however, their own classes will still be available. Taught by lifelong history teacher David Cope, The Gospel Gathering often presents classical art, music, literature, and sometimes even cuisine, to connect us with the stories of the Bible. Meets weekly in Underwood West. Sometimes church gets a bad rap as a place that has all the answers, when God means it to be a place that is open to (and encouraging of) all our questions. In this class, participants will be encouraged to think critically, feel deeply, and wrestle earnestly with the reality of life and of the gospel. Join us to be a part of joyful, holy conversation as we explore the riches of God's grace together. Gathers weekly in Underwood North.  This inclusive class is designed to be appropriate for adults with developmental delays. Open to all, the class provides an informal and fun opportunity to study how Sunday’s Scriptures relate to participants’ lives. Meets weekly in the Library. Good Shepherd is a cross-generational community. Even in cross-generational community, it is important to have spaces where we can connect those in similar phases of life. Here's how we break down our adult "phases" at Good Shepherd. Young adults (ages 18-35) make up a growing part of our congregation. Connecting them to one another and across our ministries is one of our goals as a community. They are committed to providing a listening and supportive environment to those in need of care. Helping Hands supplements existing informal helping networks within the church community. We deliver meals during times of stress and transition, such as recovery from surgery, a postpartum period, or during a time of acute grief. Occasionally, other kinds of help can be arranged, such as a ride to a doctor’s appointment. At Good Shepherd, we seek out ways that we can serve others both here at our church and in the greater community. Below are some of the many ways that Good Shepherd regularly serves the community. Coffeehouse is an evening of entertainment and fellowship for people of all ages and abilities held at Good Shepherd. It’s designed to be especially appropriate for adults with developmental disabilities. With over 250 guests each month, many are needed to serve at these events. Coffeehouse is a great place for families and groups to serve. If you are interested in donating food or serving at Coffeehouse, contact the Coffeehouse team at [coffeehouse@gslchurch.org](mailto:coffeehouse@gslchurch.org). Fall 2024 dates for Coffeehouse are 9/27, 10/25, and 12/6. More information about Coffeehouse is available at [The Serving Cup](http://www.servingcup.org/). Memory Café is a fun, safe, welcoming place for fellowship, dinner, and MUSIC! Individuals experiencing dementia and their caregivers who wish to socialize with others in similar circumstances while enjoying an evening out are invited to participate. We have found that a special connection exists when children and youth participate in Memory Cafe as servers, and there are numerous opportunities for adults to serve. Memory Café takes place several times a year on Monday afternoons from 4:30 – 6:00 pm at Good Shepherd including the upcoming fall 2024 dates of 10/14 and 12/9. To learn more about serving at Memory Cafe, contact the Memory Cafe team at [memorycafe@gslchurch.org](mailto:memorycafe@gslchurch.org). Each month, Good Shepherd supports a local partner through our Food Barrel found outside the Sanctuary. The Food Bank of Eastern NC, Backpack Buddies, Families Together school supplies drive, North Raleigh Ministries, and more are served through Good Shepherd's Food Barrel.  A list of needs is provided each Sunday in the bulletin. Consider making the Food Barrel part of your households' monthly giving. You will extend our care and love when you do! Good Shepherd provides a dinner for the folks staying at the Helen Wright Center whenever there is a 5th Sunday of the month. The HWC is an emergency shelter for women experiencing homelessness and is a part of Urban Ministries of Wake County. We typically feed over 70 women.  To participate or learn more, contact the church office at [info@gslchurch.org](mailto:info@gslchurch.org) Good Shepherd invests in four core community partners throughout the year through volunteer efforts and financial support. Family Promise, is a private, non-profit coalition of individuals and religious organizations united to provide short-term shelter, meals, and other assistance to homeless families of Wake County, with the objective of seeing them return to independent living. Throughout the year, Good Shepherd provides meals, shelter and care to families working to establish independence through Family Promise. There are numerous opportunities to serve the families directly or behind the scenes. Moving Families in Wake and surrounding counties from homelessness to stable homes through mentoring, housing support and connection to community resources is the mission of Families Together.  Good Shepherd partners with them to help provide emergency assistance and near term housing options to families in need.  For more information on the Families Together program, please visit www.familiestogethernc.org. Seeking to put God's love into action, Habitat for Humanity brings people together to build homes, communities and hope.  The need for affordable housing is growing more urgent as our area grows. We need your ongoing support in advocating, funding and engaging with our work. This year, Habitat Wake will build 40 new homes locally, complete exterior repairs on 40 homes, and advocate for housing aid for families impacted by COVID-19 and property tax relief for homeowners. Families with elementary or middle school age children are eligible to receive child friendly breakfast and lunch foods in addition to the Food Pantry groceries. North Raleigh Ministries needs production volunteers for both Thrift Shoppe locations. This involves sorting, pricing, and displaying donated items. They are also looking for food processors for the Food Pantry. Food processing volunteers need to be able to lift 50 lbs.
