GSLC Junior Girl Scouts Update - February 2007
The Junior Girl Scout Troop 1258 have been busy for the past several months.
Our troop is made up of 10 girls in grades 4th-6th. We have been working on
several badges and had a couple of fun outings in the past three months.
Our troop went on a weekend retreat to Blue Jay Point and learned about and >
completed the badges related to "Our Outdoor Surroundings" and "Outdoor
Creativity". We did a nature walk, identified trees, and went bird
watching. We also attended a Scout Saturday at Blue Jay Point where we
worked on our "Rocks Rock" Geology badge. Three of our 6th grade Junior
Girl Scouts are preparing for their bronze award by presenting health
related badges to the entire troop. Catherine Airey helped the entire troop
earn their "Highway to Health" badge, Sam Plymale helped them earn their "A
Healthier You" and Allie Chorney helped them earn their "Food Power" badge.
These three girls are preparing for their big bronze award project of a Fun
and Fit Wellness Fair for junior girl scouts which they will present in
April. The remainder of our meetings have been working on the "Jewelry"
badge and learning about "Girl Scouting in My Future" and "Girl Scouting
Around the World" from the cadette and senior troop also at Good Shepherd.
Our final event of February was a Different Shoe Day & Thinking Day
Celebration and dinner for the girls and their families in which we learned
about our different heritages and backgrounds and sampled food from
different countries represented in our troop's heritage. Finally, this is
cookie time for Girl Scouts. Look for us at cookie booths around the city
as we also wrap up our annual Girl Scout cookie sales.
GSLC Teen Girl Scouts Update - February 2007

Teen Troop #1542 is comprised of nine 9th and 10th graders. We continue to
work on our Gold Award requirements. We sold 779 buttons and 12 t-shirts at
one of the button booths for First Night Raleigh as one of our fundraisers
for our trip to Europe this summer. We had an overnight at Blue Jay Point
Park the first weekend in January. We made birdhouses while we earned the
Wildlife badge. It was one of those weekends that was about 70 degrees - we
lucked out!! We had a clear night for star gazing during our campfire. We
had a food drive in January and collected 126 pounds of food for the NC Food
Bank. When we dropped the food off, we volunteered for 3 hours. In
February, we went skiing with the youth group from church and we also helped
the Junior troop earn a couple of their badges. We've also been selling
cookies every weekend in February!

GSLC Girl Scouts Collect Blankets for Community Organizations

Girls participated by collecting blankets, making blankets to be donated, or volunteering at a collection site. GSLC Troop 1542 participated by making 3 blankets and collecting gently used blankets as well as volunteering at one of the drop off locations."
"Junior Troop 1258 collected 51 blankets and made 2 new fleece blankets as one of our projects. The troop will be delivering the blankets they collected in person to a local charity in the month of November."

We went to a GS event on Oct. 29 called Scouting for the Cure which teaches the girls about breast cancer awareness. The girls hand sewed each letter on the banner for the banner contest and we won!!
We also went to a teen camporee the weekend of Oct. 22 at Camp Mu-sha-ni. This is a girl lead event. The theme this year was a "Red Carpet Affair". The girls enjoyed going to workshops that ranged from making home spa items (like bath salts, lip gloss, body glitter) to making a duct tape purse to yoga to making purses out of jeans to making memo boards to dancing, etc... The girls made jambalaya for the big potluck dinner of 500+ people and enjoyed the talent show.
Jr. Girl Scouts
Junior Girl Scout Troop 1258 is a new Junior Girl Scout at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church and we are so excited to be here. The troop presently consists of nine girls and two leaders and a wonderful group of supportive parents. The nine girls that presently make up the group are in 4th and 5th grades but the troop is open to any girl ages 8-11 or in the 4th-6th grades.
We presently have six fourth graders and three fifth graders from various schools and churches around the area. Our first official meeting was held on Thursday night, September 1st in the trailers at the end of the preschool building. Our meeting schedule is on every first and third Thursday of the month with some extra Thursdays and weekends scheduled for special events and fun activities.
The motto and slogan of Girl Scouts is to, "Be Prepared and Do a Good Turn Daily." As a new junior troop, we are encouraging our members to learn and experience new activities through badge work, community services, and special events. Some of the upcoming events that the girls will be participating in include the "Be A Star" badge workshop which is sponsored by Cadette Troop 1542 which also meets at Good Shepherd on Thursday nights, a birthday tea celebration of Juliette Low's (the founder of Girl Scouts) Birthday on October 31st, and participating in this years Veteran's Day parade downtown. There are other activities scheduled throughout the year that encourage the girls to try new things and learn new skills.
If you have a daughter ages 8-11 or in the 4th-6th grade, please join us. As mentioned above, we regularly meet every 1st and 3rd Thursdays of each month in the trailers from 6:30-8:00. We also have scheduled monthly celebrations and special activities that we would love to tell you more about when you join. If you are in grades 4-6, please call Jan Deckert at 676-8194.
As always , the Girls Scouts are always looking for ways to help out and serve the church and community . If you need a helping hand for your event, please give us a call, we love to
volunteer! Thank you again to Good Shepherd Church for allowing us to meet in your facility. We look forward to being with you for many years to come as we watch our girls turn into young women with all the skills and experiences that girl scouts offers to help them along their journey through life. Come join us on the journey - we would love to have new members!
Teen Girl Scouts
Girl Scout Troop 1542 has 11 girls that are in grades 8 and 9. We meet 3 times per month on Thursdays from 6:30-8:00pm. Girls in the 8th & 9th grader are welcome to join the troop. Call Heidi S.
Over the past year, each girl has been working on their Silver Award. The Silver Award is the highest award in their age group and second highest overall in Girl Scouts. It requires a 30 hour service project plus 25 leadership hours, and other miscellaneous badges and pins. Some of the projects that the girls have been working on are: planning and leading an overnight with a younger troop of girls at Blue Jay Point Park, putting together a packet of information about community service organizations, planning and leading an event with a younger troop of girls to learn about horses, planning and leading an event with a younger troop of girls to learn about cameras and theater, planning and leading a camporee with numerous younger troops at a Girl Scout Camp, and sewing blankets for people in need.We are volunteering for some Coffee Houses and Parents Night Out events. We also helped during WIHN. We will be attending the Scouting for the Cure event in October which is about Breast Cancer Awareness.
We are planning a trip to England, France, and Switzerland in July 2007. We will stay at the Girl Scout World Center in London for a week. Then, we
will travel to Paris and Lucerne and finally, stopping at the Girl Scout
World Center in Adelboden. We have MANY fundraising events planned this
year to offset the cost of this wonderful opportunity. Any community
support is greatly appreciated!!!
