Mission statement
We are so fortunate to have the opportunity to assist seminarians in preparation for effective pastoral ministry. This year, our intern is Vicar Shawn Hannon. Our Internship Committee engages with the intern in three ways:
- We consult with the intern in the formulation of the Learning Covenant. The Committee helps to identify resources and learning opportunities for the intern. The members communicate their impressions of the intern’s opportunities for growth. They discuss how the intern can set priorities to meet the congregational needs effectively.
- We provide feedback to the intern about the way in which his/her ministry is experienced.
- We work with the pastor to identify areas that may require additional attention during the intern’s final year
The Committee also works with the staff to handle personal and logistical issues such as housing, office facilities, and other budgetary needs. The Committee offers a listening ear, provides feedback from our personal observations (and from those brought to us by the congregation), and provides feedback to the staff on the vicar’s needs.

Previous Year’s Highlights
- The Committee collected information on apartments in the area, completed the internship budget, and welcomed the couple to Raleigh for house-hunting trip in July. With the help of church members, Shawn and Carol moved into their new apartment on August 19.
- The Committee worked with Shawn on formulation of his Learning Covenant and ideas for internship projects.
- Vicar Shawn has been very successful in initiating and building congregational support for his Intern Project –a Men’s Ministry at Good Shepherd (RAMS). The men of the Committee (and some male spouses of members) have enjoyed participating with Shawn in this endeavor.
- In January, the Committee completed a formal, mid-year evaluation for the seminary.
Current Year’s Goals
- The Committee will support Shawn as he continues his work at Good Shepherd -- building and sustaining the Men’s Ministry, leading worship, preaching, teaching SME and Bible studies, assisting in weddings and funerals, leading worship at Joy of Discovery, and becoming involved in all aspects of parish life.
- In August, we will complete a final Committee evaluation and recommendation.
- Our Committee will organize a farewell reception on August 16 to provide an opportunity for the congregation to express its appreciation and gratitude to Shawn.
