David A. Sloop

Pastor David grew up in Asheville, NC. He is a 1973 graduate of UNC-CH. He received Master Degrees from Harvard University and from the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Gettysburg.

Pastor David and Sally were married in 1976. Sally works in the SmartStart program for the state of North Carolina. They have two children, Elizabeth and Peter. Elizabeth is a junior at Roanoke College in Salem, Virginia, and Peter is a senior at Southeast Raleigh High School. In addition, they have been guardians to three children, now grown. They celebrate their grandchildren Christian and Grant, children of Karen and Ernie Ceccado, of Hickory, NC.

The Sloops came to Raleigh in late 1982 from Burlington where David was an Associate Pastor. In addition to serving as the Pastor of Good Shepherd, he has been a past Chairperson of the Lutheran Family Services Board of Directors.

Pastor David is an avid cyclist, and has ridden the entire Blue Ridge Parkway. Before he turns 50, he plans to learn how to dunk a basketball.

Denny Brake

Pastor Emeritus

Pastor Brake has served four Lutheran congregations in Montana, and Iowa. He and his wife Sarah moved to Raleigh in 1993, and Pastor Brake began serving as Pastor Emeritus in 1997. The Brakes celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1999.

The Brakes have three children, and five grandchildren. Their daughter and son-in-law, Jeanette and George Kuchenreuther are members of GSLC, along with their three grandchildren: Karen, Amy and Adam.

Pastor Brake is a published humorist, and frequent guest speaker for other organizations.

 


Carol Henderson

Carol J. Henderson was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois to a family of violin makers and restorers (Carl Becker and Son). Attending Lutheran elementary and secondary schools, Carol was always involved in music and the arts. Carol began to play the piano at age three. She acquired her B. M. and M.M. degrees in Sacred Music from Westminster Choir College in Princeton, NJ where she focused on Organ Performance, Choral Conducting and Church Music History. Carol is also the sub-dean of the American Guild of Organists for 2005-2007 and a member on the worship committee of th ELCA NC Synod.

Her family life was rich in chamber music and she came to find accompanying strings and voice to be an equally rewarding experience. She is married to Richard and has two grown sons: Bill and J.R.. Her husband retired from the financial industry in 1999 and they "bought the farm" in Buffalo Junction, Virginia where they now reside.

Besides her work at the church Carol is also active in community civic affairs in Clarksville, VA where she founded the Lake Country Chorale in 2000, and in the Clarksville theater painting and designing sets and using her musical talents in various ways throughout the town. She also, has been known to catch a few bass out of their pond on the farm and can be found motoring about in their small boat on Buggs Island Lake (Kerr Reservoir).
 

 


Diane Schroeder

Organist

Diane Schroeder became the organist at Good Shepherd in 1991. Diane has her roots in the Midwest. Most of her childhood was in Saginaw, Michigan where she attended a Lutheran School with an adjacent church for after-school organ practice. In 1971, Diane graduated from Valparaiso University in Indiana with a BS in Elementary Education and minor in Music. She received a MS in Elementary Education from Northern Illinois University in 1974 and has taught in Hobart, Indiana and Elgin, Illinois.

Diane and Paul were married in 1972. They have two sons, James and Jeffrey. The Schroeders moved to Raleigh in 1987. Diane has served as a substitute organist in various churches. She has been involved with youth programs, Sunday School, VBS, and choirs.

This year, Diane returns to teaching with a position teaching 2nd Grade at St. Timothy's School.

Diane enjoys tennis, sewing, gardening, and reading.

 


Shirley Anthony

Raised in Texas, Shirley has lived in California, Arizona, New Hampshire and upstate New York. She moved here from Saratoga Springs, NY, seven years ago. A member of the congregation for six years, she has worked as the church administrator for three years. She especially enjoys publishing the monthly newsletter and other graphic designs for the church.

She has four grown children, four grandchildren, and five grand-dogs. Her two daughters and one of her granddaughters live in Raleigh, but her two sons and three other grandchildren are still in New York. Her mother, Irene, is a resident at Springmoor's Stewart Health Center.

Shirley is also an artist, primarily in computer graphics. She enjoys reading, plants, music, gingerbread houses, dachshunds, computers, and cooking. Her puppy, Sadie, is one year old.

 

 


Lois Walker

Lois is originally from Syracuse, NY and has lived in Raleigh since 1975. Lois and husband Fred, since deceased, transferred from Grace Lutheran to GSLC in the fall of 1994. She has 3 grown children and 6 grandchildren. Lois is retired after working 23 years with the NC Division of Mental Health, Child and Family Services Branch.

Lois has been a part-time staff person since February, 2001. She sings in the Chancel Choir, and is a member of the Worship & Music, and Hospitality Committees.

Lois enjoys family activities, going to concerts and plays, traveling, and Via de Cristo activities.

 


Beth McCauley

Preschool Director

Beth and her family joined GSLC in 1990. She grew up in the neighboring Triangle city of Chapel Hill. Beth is a former Wake County Public School teacher, specializing in learning disabilities, reading, and special education. She joined the Good Shepherd Preschool teaching staff in 1996 where she taught in the program for both the one-year-olds and four-year-olds. She has been Director of Good Shepherd Preschool since July 2000.

Beth and John have a daughter, Ashley, and a son, Connor. Both of their children attended Good Shepherd Preschool–quite a few years ago.

Beth enjoys gardening, computers, reading, and the joyous sounds of young children's laughter!
